Olympic Condoms

Olympics Board

Watching the Winter Olympics this year has been less than stellar. Maybe its the obscurity of some of the events or the leftover high of a very hyped and watched Super Bowl season. Though one thing has caught attention regarding the Olympics this year, the CONDOMS. Yep, the condoms. Not the official condoms of the olympics (not sure of the supplier) but the amount supplied to the Olympic village, 100,000.

As astounding as that number may be, it seems to be the norm. A stock of 100,000 condoms, equaling 14 for each of the 7,000 athletes, coaches, trainers and officials housed in the two villages. (Forget the fact that most of these athletes, coaches, trainers and officials are married. Not that married couples may not use condoms for birth control measures but why should the olympic village supply birth control.)

The Barcelona games of 1992 were the first to distribute condoms to the villagers in mass. Sydney organizers estimated that 70,000 would be enough. Having to order an extra 20,000, they were obviously wrong. Beijing also ordered 100,000 condoms with an Olympic motto: Faster, higher, stronger.

What ever happened to the days when athletes would abstain from sex, until the training and the event were complete. Where are the days when sex was seen as an unnecessary distraction for serious athletes. Obviously with the constant sport-star sex scandals (not just the Tiger Woods thing) and the general cultural apathy of controlled sex drives, it is no wonder the worlds best athletes are “excelling” at all “games.”

Rampant sex in high school sports will only explode as this and other sexually tantalizing experiences flood the sports world. (Not that high school students need any more fuel to have sex.) As with the advertising of sports equipment manufacturers, big name athletes sell a lifestyle. Though no specific marketing theme may be behind the distribution of the 100,000 condoms to the Olympics athletes, the trickle down effect is that the young people of the world will be influenced. What once was train hard and take your vitamins, will not be degraded to, More Sex = Better Athleticism.

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
